When she recollected those days Marie also quoted from Robert Herrick’s poems: Gather the roses while ye may Whilst old time is still a-flying For the same roses that bloom today Tomorrow will be dying The photograph presented here is a rare image of their last meeting at the Romanian Royal Court in the autumn of 1898. ******************************** All rights reserved©Diana Mandache’s Weblog Royal History www.royalromania.wordpress.com Posted in European royal families, Romanian Royal Family | Tagged British Royal Family, European royal families, Familia regala, istoria regalitatii, Noblesse et Royautés, Prince Alfred of Edinburgh, Queen Marie of Romania, Regina Maria, Romanian Royal Family | Leave a Comment » The Most Popular Monarch in south-east Europe: Poll results and brief analysis September 6, 2009 by Diana Mandache The Poll entitled “Who in your view is the most popular south-east European monarch?†has came to a close on 5 September 2009. It ran for one month and 107 of you, my blog readers, from all over the world, kindly spared time and voted one of its options. This poll being so open to a global audience through the medium of the Internet, reflects also in great measure a global opinion about the popularity of the south-east European monarchs. The results show that King Michael of Romania is the most popular monarch in the region, a recognition of his huge merits during his reign but also as a moral beacon for many generations, showing how a man and a king has to deal in various complex situations, completely maintaining his moral integrity. The result of 50% indicates that his popularity is equal with all the other three monarchs together in the region. There was an apparent goodwill period from the governments of these Balkan countries toward their respective royal families that lasted until 2008, which looks now more like a ploy to gain trust from the western countries in order for the local elites to fulfil their aspirations in gaining membership in western organisations. Now, as the EU/ NATO etc. membership has been achieved, the Romanian and Bulgarian governing elites do not need their royal families on their side anymore. The crisis also has dramatically reduced the important wealth amassed over the last two decades by the top echelons of the Romanian and Bulgarian society, which have now started to prey on whatever is close to hand to recoup some of their rapidly eroding fortunes. The royal properties are some of the most obvious targets, as these elites, originating in the old communist apparatchiks, have a long anti-royalist tradition. The future looks uncertain, as the Romanian and Bulgarian governing upper classes do not need anymore their royals in the pursuit of their short or long term objectives. They saw Such grief, that they could see no more. The heart — That quick’ning pulse of nations — could not bear Another throb of pain, and could not hear Another cry of tortur’d motherhood. Those uncomplaining lips, they sob no more The soundless sobs of dark and burning tears, That none have seen; they smile no more, to breathe A mother’s comfort into aching hearts. The patriarchal Queen, the monument Of touching widowhood, of endless love, And childlike purity — she sleeps. This night Is watchful not. The restless hand, that slave To duty, to a mastermind, to wisdom That fathom’d history and saw beyond The times, lies still in marble whiteness. Love So great, so faithful, unforgetting and Unselfish — must it sleep? Or will that veil. HRH Crown Prince Alexander II’s envoy academician Miroslav Gasic awarded the winner horse “Ela mala†from Sabac stable and its trainer with a prestigious cup. The “Memorial of His Majesty King Alexander I“ horse race was established in 1935, after assassination of HM King Alexander I. Last year the race was held in Sabac for the first time. This years’ event at Sabac Hippodrome gathered around fifty best horses from Serbian stables, and was extremely well attended. [Belgrade, 31 August 2009. I decided to stand for the Presidency of Romania about a half a year ago. Today, I know that a “Different Romania†is possible, and that people believe in it. The 12% of Romanians who would vote for me are a priceless source of Good. They embraced the idea of respect for the State and of professionalism in public life, by their own will and choice. 12% of convinced Romanians are more powerful than 35% cheated, constrained or self serving Romanians. How do things stand today? The political left is in the Presidential pocket. Those on the right chose to ignore the project of The Royal House, believing that they would thus obtain political profit in the short term. This is a repetition of the mistake made in 1997. Normally, the effort to heal the Institutions of the Romanian State should unite the business community, civil society and the media around my project. It did not happen this way.
