Happy Blogiversary To Me! by Angel years – 6 blog posts – 1852 blog comments – 13911 additional blogs and sites of my own – 7 husband – 1 friends – countless Watching blogging and social media grow into the veritable monster it has become has been very entertaining, and quite an eye-opener for me. I never dreamed when I started blogging that I would actually make friends in real life with the people whose blogs I was reading! I also found that the people I met are almost all a lot like they are on their blogs! Some are a lot shorter than I imagined. Some have deeper voices than the ones I heard in my head. Some have children. Some are no longer blogging. Many are like me. See, I don’t mingle, I’m not one of those people who talk to strangers in bank queues. And these people I have gotten to know, they also battle to make small talk with people they don’t know, and actually getting to know someone on the internet by reading their blog means I can walk into a blogger meetup and not feel like I’m amongst strangers! I have tried and failed to explain to non-bloggers how blogging has impacted my life, but unless someone actually has a blog its very hard to put into words why I would want to share so much of my life with innumerable strangers. I blog to support other parents raising ADHD children. I blog to occasionally explore my fiction writing ability. I blog to think things through. I blog about my loves. I blog about my pet peeves. I met my husband through my blog. Through social media I have been able to turn a love of cupcakes and a passion for weddings into business ventures. I am still my most important reader. And that said- without you, oh ever loyal bunnies of mine- this blog would have fizzled and died a long long time ago. Thank you for reading my blog. Thank you for leaving your comments on my blog. And if you’ve been lurking- today’s the day you say hello! May 18, 2011 15 Comments ADHD, Your School & Teachers by Angel I wrote another post for Jozikids this week, you can read it here. May 16, 2011 3 Comments Should We Worry? by Angel I seldom blog about politics or religion, apart from saying I’d been to vote or some such… but this year’s municipal elections will be the first ones my son takes part in as a registered voter. I asked him the other day if he knew who he was going to vote for and he said no. We don’t really discuss politics at home or get into the pros and cons of any particular political party. I don’t know who my hubby has voted for and I don’t feel the need to know. But I do like to make educated choices when I vote, and our political parties don’t give you much to go on do they. How is my son supposed to choose!? Here are some examples of what I’m getting at. The local weekly paper was chock-a-block with political statements and where to vote and details on the candidates of the various parties this week, as well as a report back on the paper speaking to voters. On the cover was a picture of a young woman who passed matric with an exemption and now works at a petrol garage. She says she’s NOT voting in the next elections because she won’t support parties who don’t care “about us”. This is a huge part of what’s wrong with our country’s functioning! You don’t not vote when you’re pissed off. When you’re pissed off is exactly when you should vote so that you can try and make a change for the better! But who the hell do you vote for!??! I was looking at various parties’ candidates. There are businessmen and women, entrepreneurs and retirees, one candidate is unemployed, one is “working on the campaign”, one is a wife and mother, and some parties give no details about their candidates at all. They were all asked “What would you address first, if given the chance?” The answers are quite entertaining, and thats about all. And I quote: ” There are a lot of general problems in the community but we need to focus on things like street lights that don’t work and take up the issue that some people don’t have land.” “I will act as the mouthpiece between the community and the government.” “I would focus on building a good relationship with the community I will serve.” This one was a blanket statement from the party: “Challenges that need to be addressed, specifically crime, infrastructure (potholes) and service delivery (account issues). “ Most of us know what the issues are, and its fabulous that the candidates seem to be aware of what the issues are too, but I want to know exactly what you plan to do about them! Saying you’re going to be “…building a good relationship…” doesn’t mean shit. Neither does “…acting as a mouthpiece…“. The posters along the street aren’t much better. “Lets build better communities together“. WTF does that mean?! How are you going to do that!? How are you going to curb corruption and guarantee service delivery? How are you going to ensure children go to school? What do you have in mind when you say “…people don’t have land…“? Why don’t you- as political parties and people who have the opportunity to speak in public- explain to people why they need to vote, and how voting for the same party year after year simply because that’s what you’ve always been told to do isn’t necessarily going to get you anywhere! Sssssigh… How am I supposed to help my son make an educated choice? Yes, he has the right to vote. Yes, he has the right to a secret vote. Yes, he has the right not to vote and the right to spoil his ballot. As do we all. But next to none of the parties give you anything apart from ridiculous, safely neutral, blanket statements like “service for everyone” or “lets do it together“. They say almost nothing that they may actually be held accountable for. How do you decide who to vote for? Do you expect your children to vote as you tell them to? Do you give them opportunities to educate and decide for themselves, where to put their “X”? Do you explain to them how the process works? May 13, 2011 8 Comments I Just Want To Share… by Angel Yesterday I spent the morning in a hospital waiting room with my granny darling. She is on the military medical aid, so its hurry up and wait, and often when we go its a whole day even with an appointment! The previous times we’ve been there I have noticed that the kidlets waiting with their mommies have absolutely nothing to do, the moms don’t bring anything and there’s nothing in the waiting room- not even magazines. And when you’re there for hours, the children get very bored and whiny. When I pack a bag to go with my gran, I take a big bag and I pack magazines and sometimes snacky stuff for us as well, coz I know we’ll be sitting for a while. Yesterday I was packing my big bag and I discovered a packet of balloons still in the bag from when we did our family photoshoot a while ago. I left them in my bag for just in case (and now you know why my family calls my handbags “black holes”). Once we’d been sitting for about 40 minutes, I blew up a bright yellow balloon. A little boy across the room from us was watching me with eyes as big as saucers and when I held out the balloon his mommy nudged him and said he could fetch it. I reckon he was about 4 years old, and he ran across the room with a HUGE smile on his face and said “thank you” as he took it from me! He ran back to his mommy and when his back was to me I blew up another one. He turned around and grinned and fetched that one too. Now his arms were full! Then he was throwing them and kicking them and his mommy was batting them back to him with her hand and I blew up another one, dropping it on the floor. Then another little boy appeared from around the corner and watched this happening so I blew up another one and offered it to him. His eyes lit up and he ran to fetch it from me! It was so cute! These kidlets were now laughing and giggling and I kept blowing up balloons and after a while there were about 10 balloons and people sitting around the room were batting them back at the kidlets and everyone was smiling at their antics! I s’pose there may have been a few people who got annoyed with the noise, but it made me smile.
