Leadership and Real Changes November 11, 2009 by Bret L. Simmons · Filed under: Leadership, Purpose, video One of my favorite ways to think about leadership involves the concepts of relationship, real change, and shared purpose. I discussed relationships here and here, so in this video I briefly discuss real change. Don’t change for the sake of change. Make sure you make a compelling business case for change that is aligned with your shared purpose. Wherever you find yourself in your organization, the leadership question is “What is the right thing for me to do today to advance this change toward our shared purpose?” The lesson of the sigmoid curve is to change before you are forced to change. If you wait too long, change becomes very uncomfortable and may even put you and your organization in competitive peril. It is better to change early and force your competitors to play catch-up. Tomorrow I will discuss shared purpose, so stay tuned! You should follow me on twitter here. Simmons · Filed under: personal branding, video I love video! I owned my Flip Mino HD for 4 months before I worked up the courage to put my mug in front of it and make a video.  This post is my 20th video and I am very glad I dove in and am working up the learning curve. Video allows you be be very personal and very creative. It is also a very fast way to create blog content. And there are some things that I can just say easier than I can write them in a brief blog post. My inspiration for creating video was Rebecca Thorman at Modite. She does it very well and I simply followed the advice in her article “How to start a video blog – the definitive guide.” Dan Schawbel predicts that video will become brand-standard in 2010. I agree. YOU should strongly consider incorporating video into your personal branding tactics. You should follow me on twitter here. Simmons · Filed under: Entrepreneurship, personal branding, video  Blogging is essential if you want to maximize the potential of personal branding.  Blogging is one of the most effective ways to describe how you can help others address opportunities or solve problems that matter to them. Personal branding is about enhancing the association of your name with something others value. Blogging helps you 1) articulate your understanding of what others value, 2) associates your name with the ability to deliver that value with competence and distinction. I know that most of your peers do not blog, but that is exactly why YOU need to blog!  A blog will immediately differentiate you from your peers and competition. In this short video, I give you some tips on how to get started with your first blog posts. In the beginning, you just need to LEARN how to blog. If you don’t stop, you will get better. Just do it! In just a few short months you will be very glad that you did. Simmons · Filed under: Leadership, interviews, video   Cesar Garibaldo is an undergraduate student in the College of Business Administration at the University of Nevada, Reno. He was recently selected as one of the top thirty-five business students in the United States by the Hispanic College Fund. Thirty-eight thousand students applied for the award, six hundred received scholarships, and thirty-five were selected to receive the award. That is quite an achievement! Cesar was gracious enough to let me interview him about his accomplishments. He is definately an example of leadership, courage, and grit. Cesar is a very impressive young man with a very encouraging story. Please watch the video and listen to his story! Simmons · Filed under: Leadership, Trust, video In my last video, I talked about the importance of relationship to leadership. In those four short minutes I mainly discussed how healthy relationships are characterized by mutual expectations that all parties recognize as legitimate. I also encouraged you to learn to become an independent and interdependent follower so that you can recognize, appreciate, and encourage that in others when you have the privledge to lead. I did not get a chance to talk about the importance of caring, which I discuss in this brief video. There is no substitute for performance – being very good at your given responsibilities – and no substitute for caring – about what you do, why you do it, who you do it for and who you do it with. You simply MUST learn the value of caring as a follower. If you don’t develop this as a follower, it will be very difficult to develop as a leader. We don’t trust people that we think don’t care about us, and you will not accomplish very much as a leader if people don’t trust you. Remember this: you can’t fake caring. All we have to do is listen to what you say and watch what you do over time and it will be obvious what you really care about. Simmons · Filed under: Leadership, Trust, video  This is the last video I made the morning of my recent visit to Lake Tahoe. Here is second way I love to think about leadership: Others also talk about leadership as a relationship (e.g. Kouzes and Posner) but I just happened to get this specific definition from a text by Richard Daft. In this video I only focus on the relationship aspect of this concept, and in four minutes I barely scratch the surface of how important relationship is to leadership. If I left anything out – and I’m sure that I did – please share your thoughts about the importance of relationship to leadership at the end of this post. Simmons · Filed under: Behavior, Leadership, video  Here is another video from the shores of beautiful Lake Tahoe. I did not want to miss the opportunity to talk about leadership, the subject I am most passionate about. This is the first of two videos on leadership I made that morning, so stay tuned for the second one. I got this concept of leadership from the famous book by Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus entitled “Leaders: Strategies for Taking Charge.” I don’t remember when I read it, but it was first published in 1985 so I have probably had this idea about leadership guiding my thoughts and behavior for about 20 years. I love it. It takes a minute to memorize but a lifetime to master. It resonates with me and I use it daily to help guide my behavior.  I realize some of you might be inclined to hate this idea of leadership as much as I love it, so I would encourage you to leave a comment and share your thinking; however, please watch the video and listen to what I have to say first. Related Posts: Leadership: My Bias My Bottom Line Leader of the Year You should follow me on twitter here. Simmons · Filed under: Entrepreneurship, personal branding, video  For those of you just getting started with personal branding, in this video I suggest that your online presence should include at least three things: your name, a good picture, and a statement of purpose or title for your work. Wherever you go online, be consistent with these three elements to strengthen your brand. If you are not getting started with personal branding, you should be! Even if you don’t like the content in the video, you might like the scenery around Lake Tahoe. This is the first of five videos I recorded on Lake Tahoe Saturday morning, so stay tuned for more!
