Sandia Crest in Winter
category: New Mexico
tags: New Mexico, sandia crest, snow, southwest, travel
You know how you live somewhere years and never visit someplace? Friends come to town and visit you. Then disappear to Old Town, Santa Fe, Acoma Pueblo leaving you to wonder just what those places look like. Sometimes I think I’m clocking too many hours in the office.
Sandia Crest turned out be one of those places to visit that’s so close yet too far all at the same time. We finally hit the switch backs and made our way to the top to see the beautiful view of the valley. Definitely a worth while place to drive up too and witness how the desert in the valley turns rapidly into alpine terrain at the higher elevations.
Of course, this brings snow a little closer to home for the littler ones.

Admittedly I’m not the best at removing red eye from pictures. However, I learned a quick way to convert the picture to a black and white using actions in Photo Shop.
The original.
The I ran the following actions I found over at Coffee Shop.
Coffee Shop Perfect PortraitCoffee Shop Cream Chocolate Black and White
In the black and white action I altered the curves settings to something I liked then continued on with the action.
Presto!
This has to be easiest way to alter red eye if you like black and white pictures.

Taos Pueblo

Visiting over the holidays, my brother requested to visit the Taos Pueblo we loaded up in 2 vehicles and headed for the hills. From Albuquerque the drive sits at just shy of 3 hours depending on how heavy your foot is. Once past Espanola I do recommend the lovely visitor center and rest area just before reaching Ranchos de Taos. It overlooks the Rio Grande making a splendid place to stop for a break.
Once in Taos just drive straight through and you’ll see a sign pointing to the Pueblo off to the right. You’ll go by the famous plaza with terrible parking and over priced shops. Lots of art galleries to peruse though. Of course if you choose to stay to the left you’ll end up at The Gorge. Don’t look down if you’re a little shy of heights.
My Dad took this picture of us all and I’m super pleased that everyone is looking up with at least the hint of a smile.
Things to consider at the Pueblo:
The parking lot is small and likely to be full, I recommend going first thing in the morning.
$10 for adults, students (remember your ID) and children are discounted
$5 for each camera in the group
There is a walking tour or a free guided tour.
It doesn’t take too long to visit so you can easily make this one stop of many.
Visiting in December works out well with kids, fewer people about to hinder their running around and stomping in the snow.
For a few more best shots visit Tracey.
