January 1, 2009 Posted in: Uncategorized No Comments What Ratewatchers Isn’t… Ratewatchers is at the start of its journey into investigating diet in guinea pigs. It is obvious to most that the correct diet for guinea pigs would be the one that nature created for them all those years ago, much like the climate that was given to them and can only be artificially created for them in the UK. Ratewatchers isn’t the be all and end all of the guinea pig diet, guinea pigs are individuals and this is the first thing that Humans must respect if they are to understand any of the complexities that go hand in hand with guinea pig ownership- it’s not rocket science owning a guinea pig, until it goes wrong and then it can come close! There is, however, much that can be done to prevent the need for any such Rocket Science knowledge! As with the skin care issues, where the Cambridge Cavy Trust have researched the need for bathing thoroughly, the diet is often the window to good health. Good health goes in at the mouth, whilst you have no power over the processing of the diet that you feed, by feeding a balanced diet you can be assured that you are, at least, doing your best for your guinea pig. Ratewatchers isn’t a diet specifically for guinea pigs with bladder stone problems etc, it is a diet for all guinea pigs, healthy or otherwise. Liken it to healthy eating in Humans, although healthier eating is highlighted when there is a problem present it is encouraged for healthy people too as a possible deterrent against, for example, heart disease. Eating healthily is not a cure for hereditary bladder problems, but can maximise healthy living. March 13, 2009 Posted in: Ratewatchers No Comments Super Spritzers When it comes to successfullygrowing seeds watering is one of the most important factors. Seeds respond quickly to moisture (along with warmth) and by the same token they can respond in a negative way if overwatered or underwatered. Planet Guinea sell Super Spritzers that are ideal for spritzing germinating grass and fully grown grass etc. Spritzers are by no means exclusive to us and can be found in high street stores, we just like the size of those that we stock and they adorn our grass growing windowsills. January 5, 2009 Posted in: Miscellaneous No Comments Ratewatchers After just over a year of looking at guinea pig diets from the piggy owning public we have yet to have had a Calcium high diet submitted. All have been Phosphorus high to different degrees, all have had the correct amount of vitamin C with the majority of the guinea pigs taking part getting twice the upper amount needed. Communications suggest that there is more anxiety about the correct levels of vitamin C in the diet than the Calcium to Phosphorus ratio. Life doesn’t hinge on Calcium and Phosphorus of course, the trace elements and other vitamins are as important to metabollising these and care should be taken to include them in the diet. January 5, 2009 Posted in: Ratewatchers No Comments Guinea Pig Garden The Guinea Pig Garden mix has been especially selected for guinea pigs by Planet Guinea. The mix is proffessionaly mixed by our suppliers and supplied exclusively to us. The mix contains a mixture of 50% grasses (including fescues) and 50% herbage. Varieties included are: Orchard Grass, Timothy Grass, Fescues, Plantain, Chicory, Common Vetch, and White Clover (a different variety to previous mixes). Germination outside is usually within the week dependant on weather and moisture. We recommend that herbage and grasses are cut when they are mature or follow guidelines for feeding young grasses and herbage. January 5, 2009 Posted in: Herbage No Comments Timothy Grass Timothy Grass is a fairly vigourous (though not when compared to Rye Grass) growing grass with a shallow root system. This system does not favour the hot weather, therefore Timothy thrives in the cooler seasons. It tends to dislike ‘wet feet’ too and does not thrive on extremely wet land. It is, however ideal for our humid climate. and will provide a good crop of grass in most conditions. The best way to find out if it is the ideal grass for your Piggy Patch is purchase a trial size and see how it grows.
