Kate and Gerry McCann will mark the second anniversary of their daughter’s disappearance with an interview with Oprah Winfrey, on the most famous American talk show. 24horas had already advanced this news, but official confirmation of the show’s date was lacking.
Maddie’s parents are travelling to Chicago next week, where they will complete filming, which had been started in England, of a one-hour special that is dedicated to the case, which will be broadcast on the 3rd of May, and during which they intend to present a new digital image representing the child with the look that she would have today if she were alive.
Contrary to what he had announced in Praia da Luz early this month, the couple’s spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, confirmed Maddie’s parents’ participation in ‘Oprah’, stressing the fact that the couple is counting on the interview’s broadcast in 144 countries to re-launch the searches for the little girl.
When questioned about payment or a possible financial participation by Oprah to the McCanns, Clarence Mitchell denied by saying that “Kate and Gerry won’t receive the smallest dollar”.

Meanwhile, the documentary that an English television channel came to record in Praia da Luz, early this month, and in which Gerry McCann and two of the friends that spent their holidays with Maddie’s parents participated, is going to be altered.
The producers thus want to include a series of ‘replies’ to the one that TVI broadcast on Monday, which is based on the version of Gonçalo Amaral. This information was confirmed to 24horas yesterday by a member of Mentorn Media, the company that is producing the documentary that Channel Four broadcasts in England on the 7th of May.
According to the same source, the changes were made at Gerry’s request and take into account the version that was given in Valentim de Carvalho’s documentary, where the former inquiry coordinator reaffirms his conviction that the child died in the couple’s apartment at the Ocean Club resort.
The English version of what happened points at an abduction that was carried out by a local resident or by someone with Mediterranean features.

Documentary on the Internet
The documentary from Valentim de Carvalho that TVI broadcast last Monday is being a victim of its own success. The Portuguese company has already been forced to impose its rights with various internet sites, namely the video platform YouTube, where only hours after the end of the programme, the documentary could be seen in its entirety. Despite the action, numerous sites now allow for the programme to be downloaded.

Contrary to what Gerry McCann had led to suppose in the statements that he made to the press during his passage through Praia da Luz, neither the McCann couple nor its lawyers have requested the reopening of the inquiry into the disappearance of Madeleine, so far. The information was now confirmed to 24horas by a source at the Public Ministry.
During the filming of his version of what happened on the night of the 3rd of May 2007, the night of the alleged disappearance, the father of the English girl stated that it was necessary for the police to look at the results of the inquiry in order to see “where the mistakes are and what else we can do?”.
According to the same source, after the Maddie case was archived, on the 21st of July 2008, several elements were appended to the process, but neither the joint Attorney General, João Melchior Gomes, nor the prosecutor, Magalhães e Menezes, have so far considered that “sufficiently strong” motives exist to reopen the inquiry.
Even today, almost two years after Madeleine McCann allegedly died – as Gonçalo Amaral defended in his documentary – the investigators continue to have no doubt that the inquiry was affected by a contamination that was carried out intentionally by Kate and Gerry McCann, with one sole purpose: to conceal their daughter’s death. These are the suspicions that are part of a report that was signed by a chief inspector, on the 10th of September 2007, and which are part of the process but were ignored by the PJ’s final report.
At that time, the investigator even suggested a change in the coercion measure of ‘termo de identidade e residência’ [obligation to state identity and residence] for the couple that had just been made arguidos, a fact that was also ignored by the Public Ministry, which actually allowed for Kate and Gerry McCann to abandon the Portuguese territory.
Gonçalo Amaral, the former coordinator of the CID in Portimão, continues to state that Madeleine died on the very same night that she disappeared, and in the documentary that TVI broadcast this week, he demonstrated the impossibility of an abduction, using a reconstitution played by actors to point out several contradictions in the testimonies that were given in Portugal and in England by the couple and the seven British persons that accompanied them, the so-called Tapas Bar group.
A source at the Public Ministry that was contacted by 24horas confirmed that the documentary, which is based on the book “Maddie: The Truth of the Lie”, by Gonçalo Amaral, was “watched very attentively” and that it will “obviously” be appended to the process, while the same may happen to the documentary that will result from the filming that was recently carried out under the guidance of Gerry McCann in Praia da Luz.

			Over 6 million have already watched documentary about Maddie’s death

The documentary ‘Maddie: Truth of the Lie’, that was broadcast by TVI, was the most watched programme in Portugal last Monday evening, and confirmed the station of Queluz de Baixo as the audience leader in Portugal. According to Marktest, this is even TVI’s best result in 2009.
The documentary by Manuel S. Fonseca – the same director of the ‘Amália’ movie – is based on the book “Maddie: The Truth of the Lie”, which Gonçalo Amaral, the former head of the investigation, wrote after he left the Polícia Judiciária.
According to the numbers that are now known in Portugal, the documentary, in which the former coordinator advances that Maddie died on the evening of her disappearance, obtained 53% of share and an average audience of 23,4, which corresponds to 2,209 million viewers. The number of viewers even reaches 2,466 million individuals, with audiences peaking at around 10.13 p.m., which matched a share of 69,5%.
According to the owners of several internet sites, which were contacted by 24horas, these 2,209 million viewers were joined by approximately 4 million people who saw the TVI broadcast through streaming, and not counting with those who since Monday have watched the documentary on YouTube, or on several blogs that are dedicated to the case.
Gonçalo Amaral, who was interviewed on “As Tardes da Júlia” show on TVI yesterday, further confirmed that the documentary will “hardly be shown on British television”, just like it happened with his book: “The editors were warned and they are afraid of publishing it in England”, the former coordinator of the CID in Portimão said.
Last Monday, TVI led the audience chart, with 33,8%, followed by RTP1, with 21,8%, and SIC, with 19,4 percent. At the Queluz de Baixo station, “Maddie: The Truth of the Lie” occupied the top slot of audiences, followed by ‘Feitiço de Amor’ and ‘Jornal Nacional’. ‘Telejornal’ from RTP1 was the most watched programme on the channel, occupying the fifth place in the chart, while ‘Jornal da Noite’, from SIC, appears on place nine.

			Commission launches case against UK over privacy and personal data protection
			
				The Commission has opened an infringement proceeding against the United Kingdom after a series of complaints by UK internet users, and extensive communication of the Commission with UK authorities, about the use of a behavioural advertising technology known as ‘Phorm’ by internet service providers. The proceeding addresses several problems with the UK’s implementation of EU ePrivacy and personal data protection rules, under which EU countries must ensure, among other things, the confidentiality of communications by prohibiting interception and surveillance without the user’s consent. These problems emerged during the Commission’s inquiry into the UK authorities’ action in response to complaints from internet users concerning Phorm.

			Until when will the Public Ministry keep the “Maddie” case in a drawer?
			
				It was through a press release that, on the 21st of July 2008, the Attorney General announced what was expected already: the archiving of the Maddie case, due to an alleged lack of evidence that any crime had been committed.
An incomprehensible decision, taking into account that 14 months after the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, numerous diligences hadn’t been carried out, witnesses remained unheard and, above everything else, a child had yet to be found.
Now, and according to statements by the AG himself, the Maddie case could be reopened if new data elements, but despite the appearance of several testimonies and documents, the Public Ministry has not manifested the slightest intention of continuing the investigative work that had been performed by the PJ in Portimão.
Even more incomprehensible, numerous documents from the process have come from England into the hands of journalists, and they all point towards a clear interference from the British authorities in an investigation that was well under way. It also remains beyond comprehension that the Public Ministry has decided not to prosecute all those who did everything they could to delay and damage the inquiry: the Spanish private detectives, António Toscano and his false allegations, etc.
Gonçalo Amaral, who was removed from the case allegedly due to having given a statement to a journalist, continues to claim that he fell prey to political and diplomatic pressures that could actually be verified through internal documents from the English Home Office and the police itself.
Today, almost two years after the death of Madeleine McCann, almost all of the indicia that were collected and analysed by the English lab has been destroyed, or its whereabouts are unknown, and nobody really knows what would be the famous element that the Public Ministry awaits to reopen the process, because so far, all of them have been ignored.
Several attempts have been made so far, and even with images and documents that were handed over to the police, the Public Ministry continues to ignore the real issue: the Maddie case is no longer a case that belongs to the McCanns, but rather a case that belongs to a society that needs to know the truth.

			Maddie: Reconstitution, Documentary, Propaganda or, simply, a Clown Act? Part I

With a documentary about the book “The Truth of the Lie” drawing close (which I strongly recommend to EVERYONE), the British media have massively come out to try to protect, more than ever before, the McCanns’ image. As a matter of fact, Dr Gerry McCann himself has admitted that there were “mistakes on both sides”, according to what Duarte Levy mentions, today, the 13th of April 2009, in daily newspaper ‘24horas’. Now why is that?
But this massive defence by the British newspapers is carried out through an attack, an ignorant and often lying attack, against former PJ investigator Gonçalo Amaral, with the same means. I have already stated that the traditional Portuguese almanac ‘O Borda d’Água’ has much more interest than most of the press that I’m talking about. Still, I wish to signal such media production as the reflex of what I am certain is the enormous fear that said documentary is causing on the McCanns’ side.

During two years, Dr Amaral had every means, all the time and conditions to prove his extremely serious thesis, or to discover what had happened to Maddie and whether she was alive or dead. He failed to do so, and after all the investigation’s deadlines ran out, it was closed without any conclusions, due to a lack of indicia of anything at all. But, undisturbed, the gentleman carries on, accusing the parents themselves of having killed their daughter and saying that he failed to prove it due to “political pressures”. Is this the kind of ‘justice’ that the Freeport investigators are preparing to reserve for José Sócrates, as well?” (…)

				Maddie’s father wants Portuguese authorities to reopen the case of his daughter’s disappearance. The PJ don’t believe it

During his recent stay in Praia da Luz, Gerry McCann stated that it was necessary that the Police could look at the results of the inquiry and say: “Where the mistakes are and what else can we do?”
Maddie’s father, who never voluntarily cooperated with the PJ’s official inquiry into the disappearance of his daughter, has now adopted a harmonizing speech stating, regarding the work done by the Portuguese Police that “they worked very hard and there were many pressures. Looking back, there were probably mistakes from both sides.” But Gerry’s statements do not convince PJ officers who worked on the case from the beginning under Gonçalo Amaral’s orders and who continue to defend that Maddie was not abducted: “I don’t believe he wants the inquiry re-opened… especially if we take into account the fact that they did everything to prevent the investigation reaching a conclusion,” a PJ officer told 24 Horas. “Even the Public Ministry mustn’t be that interested in seeing the case re-opened because that would mean having to admit that they made a mistake when they decided to shelve it,” conclude the PJ inspector who still maintains that “both the parents of the little girl and the friends never told the truth”.
The ‘mistake’ of the interrogations

As predicted, the inquiry into the disappearance of Madeleine was shelved by the Public Ministry shortly after the arrival of Paulo Rebelo who replaced Gonçalo Amaral in the coordination of the Portimão DIC. Paulo Rebelo, the same who had negotiated the return of Fátima Felgueiras to Portugal, was unable to continue the investigation and to carry out procedural acts considered extremely important, namely the official reconstruction of what happened on the night of the disappearance.
It was also under the responsibility of Paulo Rebelo – now assigned to the Lisbon department – that a PJ team travelled to England where the inspectors, unlike what was expected from them, were unable to follow all the interrogations of the members of the so called Tapas group, the seven English citizens who were with the McCann’s on the night Maddie disappeared. A mistake whose consequences still can’t be evaluated.
McCann family controls the financial fund
Despite the promises of transparency, it was under great secrecy that Gerry McCann, Maddie’s father, entered the group of directors who manage the financial fund that was created nine days after the little girl’s disappearance.
‘Find Madeleine’ has officially collected almost three million euros, but, not being a charitable institution, it is legally exempt from presenting its accounting, exhaustively indicating the use that was made of the money, which doubtlessly explains the fact that the documents that have been published recently, don’t include any reference to the payments of the mortgage of Kate and Gerry’s house, as well as other personal expenses.
Gerry McCann himself has recently stated that the money in the ‘Find Madeleine’ fund is soon to run out, which has prompted many negative reactions from those who initially had contributed and supported the family. The entry of Gerry into the directory actually happens after several personalities, who initially had supported the family, started distancing themselves from the couple, which has also coincided with a major diminution of financial income.
With Gerry McCann’s entry into the fund’s direction, which officially took place by the end of 2008, under great secrecy, Maddie’s parents assured complete control over the ‘Find Madeleine’ fund, given the fact that the majority of its directors are members of the family: Kate McCann, Gerry McCann, Peter Hubner, Brian Kennedy, John McCann, Edward Smethurst, Doug Skehan, Jon Corner and Michael Linett.

Internal documents
An investigation targeting several British police inspectors has been opened after a collaborator close to the McCann’s stated that several internal police documents – considered as confidential – were sent from Portugal to a British journalist.
The documents in question, which officially were not known to the Portuguese authorities, all concerning the Madeleine McCann case, were “marked” which made it possible to determine their origin in the team that had accompanied the investigations into the claimed kidnapping, without however identifying the specific source of the leak.
According to the journalist, he supposedly received the documents without having asked for them, which is the reason why he supposedly delivered a copy to a collaborator of the McCann couple “in order to determine their authenticity”.
According to a police source, the investigators already knew that the documents were in the hands of some foreign journalists, but it is only now, thanks to the contribution of the journalist and his spontaneous “source”, that the investigation could start, the file being entrusted to “a national security authority”.
It’s since the beginning of the Maddie case that a large number of documents have been released from the British police files, part of which were published in full or in part in the media, as well as on the internet, where some did not hesitate to share some documents with complete strangers, allowing in this way certain parts of the file to end up in the hands of the people linked to the lawsuit.

TVI, the television station in Queluz, is going to broadcast tomorrow, Monday, right after the evening news, the documentary that is dedicated to the case of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, which was produced in our country by Valentim de Carvalho Filmes, based on the book “Maddie: The truth of the lie”, which was written by former Polícia Judiciária coordinator, Gonçalo Amaral.
For the first time after the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, on the 3rd of May 2007, a documentary will show on television the reconstitution of what, according to the PJ senior official, really happened that night in apartment 5A of the Ocean Club. During 50 minutes of images, spoken in Portuguese and English – with subtitles – this documentary strengthens the version that Madeleine died on the night that Kate and Gerry McCann said their daughter was abducted.
In this documentary, which was directed by Carlos Coelho da Silva and produced by Manuel S. Fonseca, the former head of the investigation explains which are the inconsistencies in the testimonies that were given by the McCann couple and their seven friends, but also demonstrates, with unique documents, the results of the forensics tests that were carried out in Portugal and in England.
The former head of the PJ in Portimão further explains how the investigation evolved and the brutal manner in which it was interrupted after the British authorities intervened, namely diplomats in Lisbon and two prime ministers, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.
“There was a political and rushed archiving [of the process]”, Gonçalo Amaral states during the documentary, adding that “there are people who are hiding the truth, but sooner or later, the varnish will crack and revelations will appear”.
An important member of the team that is behind this documentary, Nuno Ramos de Almeida has read the process, carried out numerous interviews and wrote a script that is already prompting reactions in England.

English documentary is reaction to Amaral’s version
It was after hearing that the documentary which is based on the book “Maddie: The Truth of the Lie”, by Gonçalo Amaral, would be broadcast on Portuguese television,  that the McCanns realised the urgency in showing their version of the story to the public. The information was now confirmed by a source that is close to the couple, that further added that “the campaign that was launched in the Algarve was merely a manner of preparing and justifying the documentary that they want to show as quickly as possible to the English public.”
The same source, in a statement to 24horas, further confirmed that during the last few months  “several attempts were made for the couple to have access to the Portuguese documentary even before it was shown on television”, which also explains the secrecy that surrounds its contents.
“They even considered the possibility of buying the documentary’s rights for England, thus preventing it from being broadcast in the country”, the source close to the couple concluded.
In Portugal, 24horas was able to establish that all the participants in the documentary that was produced by Valentim de Carvalho have been forbidden by contract to reveal any details or officially answering any questions before its broadcast.
While the documentary with Gonçalo Amaral’s version is going to be the first one to be broadcast in Portugal, even before the second anniversary of Maddie’s disappearance, the McCanns’ version has already secured a wider diffusion throughout Europe: Channel 4 is going to broadcast the documentary that was recently filmed in Praia da Luz, and several contracts have been negotiated already. Including for Portugal, where it will be broadcast by SIC.
