Posted by: billmullins | October 16, 2008 Free FrostWire P2P - LimeWire Pro in Disguise? FrostWire (newest version: 4.17), July 2008, is free, open source Peer to Peer software, for the Gnutella and BitTorrent protocols. To insure broad appeal, FrostWire is a multi platform program running on Windows Vista, XP, 2000, NT, Mac OS X 10.4 or later, Linux, and some flavors of Unix. This application has been developed by the open source community to avoid the threat of potential legal action faced by LimeWire, from which it has been forked, and to maintain the freedom that P2P users have come to expect (right or wrong), in the sharing of copyrighted material. Some reviewers have compared FrostWire to the old Napster, the controversial file-sharing pioneer. FrostWire includes all of the free LimeWire version’s functionality as well as a number of the features of LimeWire Pro including multi-threading downloads, and Turbo-Charged connections. An added benefit in using FrostWire; you won’t have to put up with LimeWire’s nag screen or ads. Fast facts: · Open-source · Firewall-to-firewall transfers · Built-in community chat · Connects to more sources · Creative commons license support · Broadband network connection · Junk result filters · Turbo-Charged download speeds · iTunes integration · Gnutella support · BitTorrent support · Proxy Support If P2P file sharing is one of your interests, then you’ll find that this program should meet all of your needs. Download at: Download.com You should consider the trade-offs and the very real risks involved in Peer to Peer file sharing however. Peer to Peer file sharing sounds promising, right? Maybe, but make sure that you consider the trade-offs and the very real risks involved. The number of times I have been called upon to rescue a friend’s computer because of system damage caused by peer to peer downloading, has convinced me to give this form of file sharing an automatic “thumbs downâ€. Privacy: When you are connected to file-sharing programs, you may unintentionally allow others to copy confidential files you did not intend to share. So be sure to setup the file-sharing software very carefully. If you don’t check the proper settings when you install the software, you could allow access not just to the files you intend to share, but also to other information on your hard drive, such as your tax returns, email messages, medical records, photos, and other personal and financial documents. It’s extremely important to be aware of the files that you place in, or download to, your shared folder. Don’t put information in your shared folder that you don’t want to share with others. Your shared folder is the folder that is shared automatically with others on peer to peer file sharing networks. Copyright Issues: You may knowingly, or otherwise, download material that is protected by copyright laws and find yourself caught up in legal issues. Copyright infringement can result in significant monetary damages, fines, and even criminal penalties. Some statistics suggest as many as 70% of young people between the ages of 9 – 14, regularly download copyrighted digital music. If you are a parent, you bear the ultimate responsibility for this illegal activity. Adult Content: Again, if you are a parent you may not be aware that their children have downloaded file-sharing software on the family computer, and that they may have exchanged games, videos, music, pornography, or other material that may be unsuitable for them. It’s not unusual for other peoples’ files to be mislabeled and you or your children can unintentionally download these files. Spyware: There’s a good chance that the file-sharing program you’re using has installed other software known as spyware to your computer’s operating system. Spyware monitors a user’s browsing habits and then sends that data to third parties. Frequently the user gets ads based on the information that the spyware has collected and forwarded to these third parties. I can assure you that spyware can be difficult to detect and remove. Before you use any file-sharing program, you should buy, or download free software, that can help prevent the downloading or installation of spyware, or help to detect it on your hard drive if it has been installed. Viruses: Use and update your anti-virus software regularly. Files you download could be mislabeled, hiding a virus or other unwanted content. Use anti-virus software to protect your computer from viruses you might pick up from other users through the file-sharing program. Generally, your virus filter should prevent your computer from receiving possibly destructive files. While downloading, you should avoid files with extensions such as .exe, .scr, .lnk, .bat, .vbs, .dll, .bin, and .cmd. Default Closing Behavior: It is critical that you close your connection after you have finished using the software. In some instances, closing the file-sharing program window does not actually close your connection to the network. That allows file-sharing to continue and will increase your security risk. Be sure to turn off this feature in the programs “preferences†setting. What’s more, some file-sharing programs automatically run every time you turn on your computer. As a preventive measure, you should adjust the file-sharing program’s controls to prevent the file-sharing program from automatically starting. No Comments yet... Not many of us, it seems, bothers to lock our computers while we’re temporarily away from the machine creating a perfect opportunity for others to peek at our most sensitive and confidential files. Quick tip: Press the Windows Key + L which, in Windows XP or Windows Vista, will lock your computer by displaying the Profile screen. When you click on your icon and type your password, you again have access to the PC. Of course, it is not only those with physical access that can probe a computer for sensitive and confidential information. Internet malware attack statistics show, more and more, that this type of information is targeted by hackers/information thieves, for the purpose of identity theft. Can it happen to you? The short answer is – you can count on an attempt. The reality is; there is no such thing as a totally secured internet connected computer. All internet connected computers are subject to attack. To reduce, or eliminate, the security threat of sensitive data exposure, the most prudent course of action is data encryption. Essentially, data encryption is a secure process for keeping your sensitive and confidential information private. It is a process by which bits of data are mathematically jumbled with a password-key. The Encryption process makes the data unreadable unless, or until decrypted. EncryptOnClick is a free program that lets you securely encrypt and decrypt files. The program is very simple to use, and features military grade 256-bit AES encryption. After you have launched the application, simply select the target file/folder you want to encrypt. Following the easy interface, type a password for that file/folder which will then be encrypted. To open the encrypted file/folder at a later date, you must type the correct password. Quick facts: A very secure encryption and decryption method is used (256-bit AES encryption). Files are both compressed & encrypted, which results in a smaller file. Password protected. Will encrypt single files or all files in a folder. Very simple to use interface. Can be used on a USB key. Fully Unicode enabled so filenames in any language can be encrypted. OnClick will encrypt, decrypt, compress, and uncompress files which can also be opened and decrypted using third party programs like WinZip 9 (provided the correct password is used). Will detect if you’re decrypting a file that is in a temporary folder, and if so will prompt you to see if you would like to decrypt it into a different folder. Command line parameters can be used. Complete help file. Free technical support, online forums, knowledge base, and FAQs at 2BrightSparks Tip: Use on a USB key by copying the files EncryptOnClick.exe, EncryptOnClick.exe manifest, ExceedZip.dll to a named folder on the USB key. Tip: If you need more encryption power checkout the review and download link for TrueCrypt on this Blog. There may be numerous reasons why your computer behaves badly and is no longer the speed demon it once was. Simple maintenance, practiced regularly, which is easy even for a non-expert, can keep your Windows based PC running smoothly at peak performance for years. The most common problems that have impact on a computer’s speed and behavior are listed here, with the appropriate free software solution. This is not however, an exhaustive list. In most cases, since a slow computer is generally being impacted by more than one problem, you will probably find that you will have to resolve the issue using more than a single solution. Your computer takes a long time to boot and operates slowly. Too many programs loading on system startup is a common cause of longer than normal boot up times. Solution: WinPatrol Using WinPatrol you can monitor your startup programs and services, cookies and current tasks. Should you need to, WinPatrol allows you to terminate processes and enable, or disable, startup programs. There are additional features that make WinPatrol a very powerful addition to your utility toolbox. Fast facts: Decrease CPU Usage and Conflicts Express boot option Download at: Download.com A jam-packed, jumbled registry can be one of the chief causes of computer slowdown and malfunction. A messy registry can often put a brake on your system, cause programs to stop working properly, and aggravate you while you hang around waiting for the operating system to load at a snails pace. Solution: Regseeker Many applications, on being uninstalled, leave behind “orphan†registry entries. They don’t remove all traces of themselves; causing problems such as sluggish performance, system lockups, or a bloated registry that takes longer to load on startup. With the click of a button, Regseeker will scan your registry for these fragmented files, and safely remove them. Fast facts: Scans and cleans your registry Multifunctional Performs tweak operations Clean out your startup entries Add/Remove program entries Adjust color schemes Change personal information entries Download at: Download.com Disk fragmentation, especially on intensively used systems, will degrade performance over time. This is a good task to automate by using a third-party tool. Solution: Auslogics Disk Defrag The program is extremely easy to use, does not require any analysis phase and is faster than most disk defragmentation software I’ve tested in the past, and it’s free. In my view, it’s one more maintenance process in helping me get the maximum performance out of my hardware. Fast facts: Improve computer performance and stability Increase your productivity - no more waiting for files to open Defragment disks in minutes Disk fragmentation map and detailed fragmentation report Download at: Download.com Your Hard Drive is full. A full Hard Drive will not function efficiently since you require at least 2 - 3MB of free space for programs to run smoothly. If you lack this much free space, you should uninstall unused programs on your primary drive. Solution: Revo Uninstaller: Revo Uninstaller is a superior program to uninstall programs from your computer. This free program with its advanced and fast algorithm scans before, and after you uninstall an application. After the program’s regular uninstaller runs, you can remove additional unnecessary files, folders and registry keys that are usually left over (those “orphaned†registry entries we talked about earlier), on your computer. This feature is a definite plus. Fast facts: Superior uninstaller Free Fast algorithm scans before, and after uninstall Removes additional unnecessary files, folders and registry keys Download at: Download.com Running a Disk Cleaner will help to optimize your system by emptying the Recycle Bin, Temporary Setup Files, Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, Old Chkdsk Files, Temporary Files, Temporary Offline Files, Offline Files, and so on. Solution: CCleaner For a full and through cleanup, I highly recommend CCleaner. As well, you should consider copying archived files such as pictures and music, to CD’s or DVD’s to free space on the Hard Drive. Fast facts: Frees up valuable hard disk space Advanced features to remove unused and old entries Comprehensive backup feature System tray icon Privacy tool Download at: Download.com Your Internet connection is slow. Even the fastest Internet connection is a lot slower than any relatively modern PC, so make sure your Internet settings are properly optimized. Solution: Ashampoo Internet Accelerator 2: Ashampoo Internet Accelerator is a great little application that makes it easy to perform this simply task. Ashampoo Internet Accelerator 2 is an excellent free Internet connection optimizer. Fast facts: Free Fully automatic ISDN, DSL via LAN cable or cable modem, DSL via wireless LAN Improvements in performance connection Download at: Download.com Malware Infections. It’s possible of course, that the performance of your computer has been adversely affected by malware infections. If you believe that’s the case, read my article on this Blog, “Need Free Security Programs? – 10 of the Best!” Once you have removed system-clogging clutter, ensured your Internet settings are properly optimized, are satisfied your system is not infected with malware, and performed the other simple maintenance, your PC should satisfy you with its capabilities. 4 Comments Posted in Freeware, Hard Drive Maintenance, Registry Cleaners, Slow Computer, Software, System Tweaks, System Utilities, Uninstall Managers, Utilities, Windows Tips and Tools, regseeker | Tags: application, Bill Mullins, boot, clean, computer, defrag, delete, download, free, hard drive, internet, program, registry, slow, solution, speedup, Startup, uninstall Posted by: billmullins | October 12, 2008 Should You Need a License to Surf the Internet? - You Decide Car drivers must be educated, practiced, and licensed in order to drive a car. This legal requirement of course, does not stop drunk drivers from getting into a car and killing innocent victims. And it certainly does not eliminate our exposure to the speeders, tailgaters, and the road ragers that seem to plague our highways. Licensing then, doesn’t seem to eliminate the risks we face on the road. So would requiring a license to use the Internet make it a safer place for all of us? Would requiring a license from the “Department of Computer Literacyâ€, protect us from the ever increasing exposure we all face to Trojans, Spyware, Virus’, Phishing Scams, Identity Theft, ….. the list goes on. You may think that I’m being facetious; but I’m not. The fact is the dangers on the Internet are not, in a sense, unlike the dangers and risks we face while driving on our streets and highways. Unlike the need to be educated and practiced, in order to qualify for a driver’s license; to access the Internet all that is required is a modem attached to a computer. There’s no need to prove qualifications. There’s no need to prove an awareness of the very real dangers that the Internet presents. Being involved in computer security, I am amazed at the lack of knowledge exhibited by typical computer users, and most importantly, the lack of knowledge concerning the need to secure their machines against the ever increasing risks on the Internet. I’m not talking about unintelligent people here. I am talking about people who are intelligent in every other aspect of life, but who view computers like cavemen who saw fire for the first time. The problem, it seems, is multifaceted. Part of the problem is simply fear. People do not understand computers, so they are afraid of them in a sense. Secondly, people generally, are simply not interested in learning about computers sufficiently to make the fear go away. The question is, of course, should they need to know anything other than how to turn on a computer? Well maybe not. Many computer experts agree that it is primarily flawed computer software, and not just inadequate user knowledge, that is the biggest contributor to the proliferation of unsecured computer systems and cyber-crime, on the Internet. It seems to me then, what is needed as a good first step, are machines that are designed with simple, but internally sophisticated operating systems, secure and easy to use for the majority of users; where no user interaction is required to maintain the security of the system. We now live in the age of the “Interconnectedness of All Things†in which we are beginning to see the development and availability of large numbers of Internet connected devices. There is no doubt that this will lend new strength to computer-aided crime and perhaps even terrorists. Unless we develop a rational approach to the underlying security issues surrounding the Internet, and insist software companies’ stop rushing out new products with little regard for security, hackers will continue to flourish and successful attacks on computers over the internet will continue to proliferate. There are steps you can take to decrease the likelihood you will be the victim of a successful attack on your computer. The following is a brief guide to the basic security issues you should be aware of on the Internet, followed by a guide to some of the steps you can take to secure your computer for Internet usage. Security risks on the Internet you need to be aware of: Trojan horse programs Back door and remote administration programs Denial of service Being an intermediary for another attack Unprotected Windows shares Mobile code (Java, JavaScript, and ActiveX) Cross-site scripting Email spoofing Email-borne viruses Hidden file extensions Chat clients Packet sniffing Security Checklist: Actions you can take to protect your computer system: Install WOT (Web of Trust), a free Internet Browser add-on. Don’t open unknown email attachments Don’t run programs of unknown origin Disable hidden filename extensions Keep all applications (including your operating system) patched Turn off your computer or disconnect from the network when not in use Disable Java, JavaScript, and ActiveX if possible Disable scripting features in email programs Make regular backups of critical data Make a boot disk in case your computer is damaged or compromised Turn off file and printer sharing on the computer Install a personal firewall on the computer Install anti-virus and anti-spyware software and ensure it is configured to automatically update when you are connected to the Internet Ensure the anti-virus software scans all e-mail attachments 4 Comments Posted in Browser add-ons, Don't Get Hacked, Firefox Add-ons, Interconnectivity, Internet Safety, Malware Advisories, Online Safety, Personal Perspective, Spyware - Adware Protection, Windows Tips and Tools | Tags: Bill Mullins, checklist, computer, control, dangers, identity, internet, issues, Phishing, risks, scams, security, Software, spam, spyware, theft, trojans, virus, Viruses Posted by: billmullins | October 9, 2008 Internet and System Security - Common Sense Tips So what can you add to your computer’s Firewall, Security Applications and Browser security add-ons to ensure you have the best protection available while you’re surfing the web? Well, how about something that’s free, and readily available. Something called “Common Sense”. Common sense: sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts. Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary Common Sense Tip #1 - Given the virtual epidemic of malware currently circulating on the Internet, don’t run, or install programs, of unknown origin. Internet users’ continue to be bombarded with rogue security software which has reached epidemic proportions. There seems to be no end to the release of new rogue security software threats. Rogue software will often install and use a Trojan horse to download a trial version, or it will perform other actions on a machine that are detrimental such as slowing down the computer drastically. Download applications, particularly free programs, only from verifiably safe sites (sites that guarantee malware free downloads), such as Download.com, MajorGeeks, Softpedia, and so on. There are many more safe download sites available, but be sure you investigate the site thoroughly before you download anything. Googling the site, while not always entirely reliable, is a good place to start. A recommendation from friends as to a site’s safety is often a more appropriate choice. Common Sense Tip #2 - Don’t open emails that come from untrusted sources. It’s been estimated that 96% of emails are spam. While not all spam is unsafe, common sense dictates that you treat it as if it is. Much of the spam emails I’ve seen lately are crafted around spicy, scandalous, and salacious stories. This is generally a dead giveaway that you are dealing with a risky email. Here’s an email from my inbox this morning - Who to blame in world crisis?‎ - Ivanka Trump sunbathing pics http://www.000000.com. Common sense tells me there is a major disconnect between the heading of this email (Who to blame in world crisis?) and sunbathing pics of Ivanka Trump. There is no doubt that this is a dodgy email. By the way her name is Ivana, not Ivanka. Common Sense Tip #3 - Don’t run files that you receive via email without making sure of their origin. If the link has been sent to you in a forwarded email from a friend, be particularly cautious. Forwarded emails are notorious for containing dangerous elements, and links. For more on unsafe email attachments checkout New Infected Attachment Scam, on TechPaul’s site. Common Sense Tip #4 - Don’t click links in emails. If they come from a known source, type them in the browser’s address bar. If they come from an untrusted source, simply ignore them, as they could take you to a web designed to download malware onto your computer. Common Sense Tip #5 – If you do not use a web based email service then be sure your anti-virus software scans all incoming e-mail and attachments. Common Sense Tip #6 - Be proactive when it comes to your computer’s security; make sure you have adequate software based protection to reduce the chances that your machine will become infected. If you are unsure if your software based protection is up to the task then checkout the following recommended free downloads that will help you manage and protect your computer system. These applications have been well tested over the years for reliability and functionality, and all have developed a strong, loyal following. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0.1 AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0 now incorporates protection against spyware through a new combined anti-virus and anti-spyware engine as well as a “safe-searching component†which has been incorporated into the new AVG Internet Security Toolbar. This program scans files on access, on demand, and on schedule and scans email incoming and outgoing. For those on Vista, you’re in luck, it’s Vista-ready Spyware Doctor Starter Edition Spyware Doctor Starter Edition from PC Tools is an excellent choice, as a secondary line of defense. This free version of the award winning program, with its easy to use interface, is used by millions of people worldwide to protect their computers; it’s reported there are a million+ additional downloads every week. Be aware however, there is no real-time protection offered with this version and this is the reason I recommend this application as a secondary scanner only. Spyware Terminator Having tested virtually all of the major anti-spyware applications over the past year or more, I’ve settled, for now, on Spyware Terminator primarily due to its strong real-time protection against spyware, adware, Trojans, key-loggers, home page hijackers and other malware threats. Spyware Terminator excels in strong active protection against know and unknown threats. If anything, I find it perhaps a little overly aggressive. On the other hand, better this than the alternative. Comodo Firewall Pro Comodo Firewall protects your system by defeating hackers and restricting unauthorized programs from accessing the Internet. I have been using this application for 10 months and I continue to feel very secure. It resists being forcibly terminated and it works as well, or better, than any firewall I’ve paid for. This is one I highly recommend. Amazing that it’s free! HiJackFree If you are an experienced/advanced computer user and you’re looking for a program to strengthen your anti-malware resources, then HiJackFree is one that’s worth taking a look at. This free application, from EMSI Software, offers a potent layer of additional protection to add to your major anti-malware programs. The program operates as a detailed system analysis tool that can help you in the detection and removal of Hijackers, Spyware, Adware, Trojans, Worms, and other malware. It doesn’t offer live protection but instead, it examines your system, determines if it’s been infected, and then allows you to eradicate the malware. Ad-Aware 2008 In my view, Ad-Aware 2008 Free is the best free spyware and adware remover available. It does a good job of protecting against known data-mining, Trojans, dialers, malware, browser hijackers and tracking components. The only downside with the free version; real-time protection is not included. ThreatFire 3 ThreatFire 3 blocks mal-ware, including zero-day threats, by analyzing program behavior and it does a stellar job. Again, this is one of the security applications that forms part of my front line defenses. I have found it to have high success rate at blocking mal-ware based on analysis of behavior. Highly recommend this one! Web of Trust (WOT) WOT is a free Internet Browser add-on (my personal favorite), that has established an impressive 4.5/5.0 star user rating on CNET. WOT tests web sites you are visiting for spyware, spam, viruses, browser exploits, unreliable online shops, phishing, and online scams, helping you avoid unsafe web sites. SnoopFree Privacy Shield SnoopFree Privacy Shield is a powerful application that guards your keyboard, screen and open windows from all spy software. I have been using this application for quite some time, and I have been amazed at the number of programs that have requested access to my keyboard and screen. In particular, programs that I am in the process of installing. If you’re serious about privacy, this is a must have addition to your security toolbox. 3 Comments Posted in Anti-Malware Tools, Email, Firefox Add-ons, Free Security Programs, Freeware, Interconnectivity, Internet Explorer Add-ons, Internet Safety, Internet Safety Tools, Online Safety, Rogue Software, Safe Surfing, Software, Spyware - Adware Protection, System Security, Windows Tips and Tools | Tags: anti-malware, anti-spyware, antispyware, application, Bill Mullins, common sense, download, Email, free, internet, malware, program, protection, scams Posted by: billmullins | October 8, 2008 Recover Deleted Files with Recover Files.exe Freeware We’ve all done it; accidentally deleted an important file. That document you’ve been working on for weeks is no longer in your document folder. The music collection you’ve spent years putting together, or that family photo album you’ve worked on for weeks – gone. The simple solution to this problem that most of us can use, most of the time, is to simply restore the file from the Windows Recycle Bin. The Recycle Bin can be a life saver when a file has been accidentally deleted. Normally, the deleted file sits in the Bin until you empty the Bin, or restore the file. But what if the file has been permanently removed from the Bin, to make room for more recently deleted files when the maximum size allocated in Recycle Bin properties, has been exceeded. All is not lost and here’s why: when a file is deleted from your Hard Drive, or portable media, what really gets deleted is the system link pointing towards the file, but not the file itself. Surprisingly, it can often be relatively easy to retrieve the deleted file, or a good portion of the file, using specialized file recovery software, which takes advantage of this reality. To enhance the possibility of recovering the deleted file, rapid action is a prime requirement. File recovery software has limitations, so once you have realized you have deleted that important file; do not write any more files to drive until you can run the recovery program. A free recovery application with a particularly helpful and instinctive interface, one the one that I use most frequently, is Recover Files.exe from UndeleteUnerase.com. Recovering files with this freeware program is as simple as launching the application, selecting the drive, and clicking on the analyze button. Files that can be recovered, on that drive, are presented in an easy to understand format that includes the file Path, Status, Size, Date Created, Date Modified and a rating (from Overwritten to Very Good), as to the likelihood of recovery. Selecting the listed file to be recovered, clicking on the Undelete button begins the recovery process. Those users, who are unfamiliar with this type of application, will find the well written and instructive help file, particularly useful. I’ve had good success with this small application recovering deleted files, and I recommend that all users’ consider adding Recover Files.exe to their toolbox. Recover Files.exe has been awarded kudos by a substantial number of application review websites. Quick facts: Recover Files.exe can recover - Files deleted bypassing Recycle Bin. Files deleted even after you have emptied the Recycle Bin. Files deleted accidentally from a network share. Files deleted from the DOS command prompt. Files deleted when you press Shift+Delete on the keyboard. Files deleted when you use Move or Cut command. Files deleted in other applications or by viruses. Files from Hard drives Files from Floppy disks Files from Compact Flash, Smart Media, Multimedia and Secure Digital cards Files from External USB Disk Drives Files from Flash drives/Flash Memory Files from Zip disks, Jazz disks Supports FAT16, FAT32, NTFS and NTFS 5 file systems. Performs non-destructive and read-only scan and file recovery. Displays file name, type, size, date, and more. Restores original create and modified file dates. Supports Unicode and non-alphabet languages. Filters files by name, extension, folder and file type. A perfect opportunity for a parent to go nuclear, I think! Fortunately, I had convinced him sometime before this that all important data on the family computer needed to be backed up regularly. Not all of my friends have paid attention to this advice, but this one had. While he was still disturbed that the photo files had been erased, this incident wasn’t the disaster it could have been. So what about you? Do you have a disaster recovery plan in effect should this type of event, where you lose irreplaceable data, occurs with your computer? Or, have you considered locking specific files on your computer to prevent accidental deletion? Backup: It’s now easier than ever to backup giving the large choice of relatively inexpensive media, including CDs, DVDs, USB sticks, external Hard Drives, and increasingly gaining popularity, Online Backup Services. Some estimates indicate that up to 75% of all computers will connect to online backup services within 10 years. Mozy, which requires a broadband connection, is a free and easy to use online backup service that gives you 2GB of space allowing you to backup your data over the Internet. When needed, the backed up files can be restored over the Internet. You can read a review of this program and other online backup services on this Blog, or download the application at Mozy. MyBloop, which was recommended to me by one of my online friends, is another free and easy to use online backup service. This free service offers unlimited file storage, allows you to share your files, and gives you the option of creating play lists of your uploaded music files. Alternatively, you can back up to your media using a freeware program such as DriveImage XML which runs under Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista. This program will backup, image and restore drives formatted with FAT 12, 16, 32 and NTFS. You can read a review of this program on this Blog, or download the application at Runtime.org. Another Freeware Solution: Nothing of course, beats a regularly scheduled incremental back up plan, but there is another solution to prevent the accidental deletion of data from your computer. System Protect is a free, easy-to-use application from Crawler (the people who gave us Spyware Terminator), that helps keep your operating system stable, and protects important programs, documents and files from deletion caused by viruses, other users on your computer, or even your own mistakes. Quick Facts: Files & Folders Protection - prevents deletion of important files, programs and documents Protection of Selected Files - lets you choose files and folders to be protected. This ensures that a virus, other people working with your computer or even you won’t delete an important document, your favorite photos, music, movies or other files Increased Operating System Stability - protects essential system files to keep your operating system stable Deletion Attempt Notification - notifies you of any attempt to delete any of the protected files Protection for All Users - ensures protection for all computer users; administrator or restricted user Works without Distracting You - silently protects your computer without interrupting your work Deny Mode - automatically block deletion of any protected file Since mistakes are inevitable on a computer, this neat little program could be just the thing you need to reduce the chances of having to deal with that unrecoverable error. Process those words: OpenOffice OpenOffice 2 is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages including Microsoft Word. AbiWord AbiWord is a free light weight word processing program similar to Microsoft Word. It is suitable for a wide variety of word processing tasks. WordWeb WordWeb is a one-click English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows that can look up words in almost any program. It works off-line, but can also look up words in web references such as the Wikipedia encyclopedia. Manipulate and correct your pics – put them online: FastStone Image Viewer This is one of my favorite photo applications, with good reason. It’s not just a viewer, but an image browser, converter, and an editor as well. You’ll find the interface intuitive and very easy to use. This program is loaded with features including, renaming, cropping, color adjustments, lossless JPEG transformation, drop shadow effects, image frames, scanner support, histogram and much more. IrfanView IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista. Strange name – terrific application. Google Picasa Free software that helps you locate and organize all the photos on your computer, edit and add effects to your photos with a few simple clicks and share your photos with others through email, prints and on the web. Play those tunes: Audacity Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems. Definitely the best of breed. iTunes According to Apple this is the world’s best digital music jukebox. Download music, TV shows, movies, and more. Winamp A multimedia player that supports numerous audio and video formats. It also plays streamed video and audio content, live and recorded, authored worldwide. Watch your fav videos: Miro Miro is a free application for channels of internet video (also known as ‘video podcasts and video rss). Miro is designed to be easy to use and to give you an elegant full screen viewing experience. VLC A highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg …) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. Free FLV Converter This free software let you search YouTube and dailyMotion videos without opening your browser and you can even watch the videos using the built-in video player. Free Video to iPhone Converter Convert video files to Apple iPhone MP4 video format. Convert the whole movie or select a partition from the movie to convert (trim video). iPod Video Converter Free iPod Video Converter provides an easy and completed way to convert all popular video formats to iPod video. Better browsing: FireFox FireFox includes tons of useful features such as tabbed browsing, built-in and customizable search bars, a built-in RSS reader and a huge library of extensions developed by thousand of developers. Opera Opera introduces Speed Dial which vastly improves navigation to your favorite sites. In addition, there’s Fraud protection, anti-phishing detection keeps browsing safe and secure. Protect your system: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0.1 AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0 now incorporates protection against spyware through a new combined anti-virus and anti-spyware engine as well as a “safe-searching component†which has been incorporated into the new AVG Internet Security Toolbar. Comodo Firewall Pro The definitive free firewall, Comodo Firewall protects your system by defeating hackers and restricting unauthorized programs from accessing the Internet. Staying in touch: Windows Live messenger The next generation MSN Messenger. It comes with everything that were already available in Messenger, and a new i’m Initiative that makes helping your favorite charity as easy as sending an instant message. Pidgin A multi-protocol Instant Messaging client that allows you to use all of your IM accounts at once. Pidgin can work with: AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, ICQ, IRC, MSN, Yahoo!, MySpaceIM and many more. Trillian A fully featured, stand-alone, skinnable chat client that supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, and IRC. System Tools: CCleaner CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it’s fast; normally taking less than a second to run. Glary Utilities Glary Utilities, a free all-in-one utility, is a terrific collection of system tools and utilities to fix, speed up, maintain and protect your PC. Personal experience with this application for the last 8 months has convinced me that a typical user can really benefit by having this application on their system. With this free program you can tweak, repair, optimize and improve your system’s performance; and its ease of operation makes it ideal for less experienced users. WinPatrol Do you want to get a better understanding of what programs are being added to your computer? Then WinPatrol is the program for you. With WinPatrol, in your system tray, you can monitor system areas that are often changed by malicious programs. You can monitor your startup programs and services, cookies and current tasks. Should you need to, WinPatrol allows you to terminate processes and enable, or disable, startup programs. There are additional features that make WinPatrol a very powerful addition to your security applications. Revo Uninstaller Revo Uninstaller is a superior program to uninstall programs from your computer. Autoruns This free utility has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, in my view, and shows you what programs are configured to run during system boot up or login, and the order Windows processes them. These programs will include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show additional locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and more. Autoruns goes considerably beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows. Regseeker The longer you use Windows, the more cluttered your registry can become, especially if you regularly install and uninstall software. Many applications, on being uninstalled, leave behind “orphan” registry entries. They don’t remove all traces of themselves; causing problems such as sluggish performance, system lockups, or a bloated registry that takes longer to load on startup. With the click of a button, Regseeker will scan your registry for these fragmented files, and safely remove them. 3 Comments Posted in Audio Software, Browser add-ons, Cell Phone Apps, Diagnostic Software, Don't Get Hacked, Firefox, Firefox Add-ons, Free Security Programs, Free Word Processors, Freeware, Graphic Software, Image Editors, Integrated Photo Applications, Interconnectivity, Internet Explorer Add-ons, MS Word Alternatives, Media Player Replacement, Mobile Applications, Multimedia Tools, Online Photo Editing, Online Photo Storage, Open Source, Photo Tools, Portable Applications, Productivity Software, Registry Cleaners, Safe Surfing, Secure File Deletion, Software, Spyware - Adware Protection, System File Protection, System Security, System Utilities, Tracks Eraser, Utilities, Windows Tips and Tools, Writing Aids, iPod Tips | Tags: Better browsing, Bill Mullins, Play those tunes, Process those words, protect your system, Staying in touch, System Tools, Watch your fav videos Posted by: billmullins | October 4, 2008 Update Your Outdated Drivers - Free Uniblue Scan Still running your computer with outdated system and peripheral drivers? Well now you can do something about that. The fact is, computer products/peripherals are often distributed with under tested device and system drivers, which can cause real mayhem including intermittent system crashes (one of the hardest problems to diagnose), poor system performance, or buggy peripheral performance. Manufacturers of course, are not slackers when it comes to improving previously released drivers in order to fix bugs, errors and conflicts with other programs, (more common than you may think), or to increase peripheral functionality. For example, my HP home printer has had three improved drivers released in the past two years that have increased stability and functionality somewhat. If you want to take a trip on the “Frustration Express†then you can try to update your drivers manually. Believe me; you’ll be in for a long and frustrating ride. You’ll start by Googling the driver name, then investigation available drivers, many of which will have a disclaimer stating that it was not written specifically for your system/device, you’ll try it - then delete it and then your back to Googling again. Repeat the previous frustrating experience as many times as necessary and you might get lucky. Uniblue Systems, a Microsoft Gold Certified provider and one of my favorite socially conscious software developers, who are noted in the computer tech community for freely providing, as a public service, the invaluable system tools ProcessLibrary, ProcessQuickLink, and ProcessScanner, has just released a terrific utility that takes care of all these problems for you. DriverScanner will quickly scan your system, determine the drivers that have updates available, and will download and install the updated drivers which can provide you with increased system stability and more reliable system and peripheral performance. On my test bed system, DriverScanner found, in seconds, seven drivers that needed updating. Considering what I do for a living, and how fastidious I am in system maintenance, I was very impressed. DriverScanner doesn’t stop there though. Consider the last time you had to do a full re-install of Windows, (if you haven’t yet you will), and you discovered that the most frustrating part of the process was the installation of all those device drivers. The hassle you had searching high and low for the original install CD’s or worse, spending hours on the Internet tracking down those hard to pin down drivers. DriverScanner makes it easy to backup and reinstall all your Windows drivers. Using DriverScanner, you simply backup and restore to and from external devices. This is a great little application that should be part of your system and recovery toolbox. Quick facts: Driver scanner engine works via a single click Identification of drivers requiring an update Download of updated drivers specific to the hardware and OS Comprehensive driver download history Driver backup and restore to and from external devices Triggering installations of the upgrades Backup of current drivers and restore feature Use of restore points as a backup plan in case of faulty drivers Reporting of defective drivers directly from the interface Clear and simple to use interface. This is a great little application that should be part of your recovery toolbox. Losing your password can end up with you being locked out of your own machine, and what can be more frustrating than that? You would think that it would be virtually impossible to forget your Logon password; but it happens more frequently than you might think. I have several friends who rarely use their computers, and sure enough I got a call last week from one of those friends who had forgotten her Logon password. My friend is a writer and author who had just gotten over her writers block, which she had endured for months, and it was now time for her to hit the keys. Being a smart woman she had written down her password, but as so often happens, she had “lost†the piece of paper. Being a smart woman, plan number two was to call me. LOL! Within a few minutes after arriving at her home; her machine was up and running. So a potentially disastrous situation was handled quickly, efficiently no mess, no fuss. To my friend it seemed like magic. In a sense it was magic, but the magic was all about using the right tool. In this case, the tool of choice was PCLoginNow, a simple, free application, designed specifically to reset Windows logon passwords, change an account to administrator level, lock or disable accounts, and to set passwords to never expired. PCLoginNow doesn’t recover the forgotten password as many password cracking programs do, instead it erases the password. In handling the problem in this way, you can then Logon to Windows without inputting a password. If you are a “geeky techie†who has a lot of friends who expect you to solve all of their computer related problems, then PCLoginNow is a must have tool. Visit the PCLoginNow download site and download the ISO image file which you’ll then burn to a CD. Using the application, is as simply as booting the affected machine from the CD. A great solution to what can often be a nasty problem. Quick facts: Resets any passwords on any Windows computer with a 100% success rate PCLoginNow can easily bypass Syskey PCLoginNow runs on a Linux Live CD Supports NTFS, FAT16, and FAT32 file systems Supports Windows Vista, XP, 2003 server, 2000/NT Supports IDE, SATA, SCSI, USB drives Supports a wide range of PCI PCI-EX cards Designed for non-professionals Download at: PCLoginNow 3 Comments Posted in Freeware, Geek Software and Tools, System Utilities, Utilities, Windows Tips and Tools | Tags: free, Bill Mullins, download, Windows, Software, program, application, .ISO, recover, File, password, image, recovery, tool, delete, reset, pc login now Older Posts » Categories 3D Tools Adaptive Technologies Anonymous Surfing Anti-Keyloggers Anti-Malware Tools Application Vulnerabilities Audio Applications Audio Software authenticators Backuo Tools Backup Applications Backup Tools Beta Software BlackBerry Browser add-ons Browsers CD/DVD Cloning CD/DVD Recovery Tools CD/DVD Tools Cell Phone Apps Cleaning Your Computer DeskTop Publishing Diagnostic Software Disk Cleaners Do you need a new computer Domestic Violence Don't Get Hacked Drawing Software Easy Computer Networking Email Empty Folder Finder Encryption Encryption Software FaceBook Firefox Firefox Add-ons Free Anonymous Phone Numbers Free File Recovery Applications Free Full Versions Free Laptop Tracking Software Free Security Programs Free Word Processors Freeware Geek Software and Tools Google Chrome Graphic Software Green Living Hard Drive Maintenance High Definition Video Players Home Page Hijacking Homework Help Sites Image Editors Integrated Photo Applications Interconnectivity Internet Addiction Internet Explorer Internet Explorer Add-ons Internet Safety Internet Safety for Children Internet Safety Tools internet scams iPod Tips Just for Laughs Living Life Malware Advisories Manual Malware Removal Media Player Replacement Memory Optimizers Mobile Applications MS Word Alternatives Multimedia Tools Networking Online Backup Online Banking Online Gaming Online Photo Editing Online Photo Storage Online Safety Online Spyware/Virus Scanners Open Source Orkut Parenting Help PC Monitoring Application and Key Loggers Peer to Peer Personal Perspective Phishing Photo Tools Portable Applications Privacy Productivity Software Recommended Web Sites Registry Cleaners regseeker Remote Tech Support Rogue Software rootkits Safari Safari add-ons Safe Surfing Save You CPU Screen Capture Utilities Search Engines Secure File Deletion Security Rating Applications Slow Computer Software Software Trial Versions Spousal Abuse Spyware - Adware Protection Student Help Surveilance Tools Surveillance System File Protection System Memory Management System Process Scanners System Security System Tweaks System Utilities Timesaving Tips Tracks Eraser trojans Uncategorized Uninstall Managers USB Utilities Virus Repair Tools Viruses Web Development Website Previews Windows Live SkyDrive Windows Tips and Tools Writing Aids Blog Stats 425,343 views since January 1, 2008 Note to Stumblers Stumblers: If you like this Blog please give it a Thumbs Up!
