A Celebration Of Life Feedburner Friday, December 26, 2008 Slum Dog Millionaire I must admit, as I sat down in front of this brilliant movie made in years, I had no idea what I was getting into. I just could not even blink an eyelid. Hooked on for nearly 1 hr and 30 minutes, I was being witness to this story of rags to riches only quite modern in its appeal and based on the streets of Mumbai,India. A story of issues that have become synonymous with India; poverty, beggars, cheats, riots, racism, bad policing, in modernizing India; it definitely astonishes the 'foreign audiences' but for somebody from this land with 'sab chalta hai' attitude they are the coherent factors. Before I go further down, one of very many things that are worth applaud in the movies is the crispness of the script. Every scene shot as a meaning and sooner or later has its own place in the movie. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle being solved. The three parallel stories of past and recent present and present, in the background of India's version of 'Who wants to be millionaire', the question finally remains whether slum boy Jamal (Dev Patel), the protagonist of the movie is a) lucky b) a cheat c) a genius d) It’s his destiny. In his final bid to attract love of his life Latika (Freida Pinto); a vulnerable yet strong, uneducated young man is sitting on the hot seat to answer questions that would make the most academicians sweat. The whole world is in a toss on how this ’chai vala’ knows all the answers and just a day before the final question for 20 million rupees, he is being interrogated by a police officer (Irrfan Khan) who starts with a bloody interrogation only being surprisingly sympathetic later on.The story starts with this scene and immediately sets the pace of the movie. A bunch of slum children playing cricket on very near to the airport runway and the policemen trying to shoo them away. They run for their lives for the fear of being caught and this establishes the endless run that the two brothers Salim (Madhur Mittal) and Jamal will be in throughout their lives. The boys give the two policemen a good chase, running into a helpless mother who tries to earn by doing sundry things in the slum and sends her two boys to school. The class is busy in mugging up 'The Three Musketeers' and this becomes the deciding factor towards the end of the movies, where Jamal's fate of rupees 20 million rests on this question on which the 'Third Musketeer' is. Similarly relevant is the scene where a riot breaks out in the city and both brothers lose their mother. They save a girl ‘Latika’ whom Jamal sees as the third musketeer, Salim and Jamal being the other two.The three land up in orphanage where a brutal reality forces Salim to take Jamal out of this hideouse orphanage and start life afresh. A hideous place, children are kept and trained into professional beggars in the orphanage. Salim becomes a head of sorts who manages the score of children for the head of the orphanage. One night he sees how children are being disabled in gory ways and he takes Jamal and Latika out of the place displaying an act of heroism. But just as they are able to catch the train he leaves Latika behind and ensures Jamaal’s safety. Jamal however has had his first brush of feelings for LatikaIn a few fast paced events, the children are shown growing up to adolescence while doing varied jobs across various parts of northern India as cheats and thieves. In a chance event, they come back to Mumbai, where the story started. Jamal and Salim still do sundry jobs but Jamal is bent upon finding Latika. Latika is found as a trainee prostitute, where a fight makes Salim an important ally of the mafia don Javed bhai. Jamal’s love for Latika is more of a schoolboy crush taken to extremes. Salim forcefully exits Jamal from Latika. Years pass and the young teens have grown up. Laitka is now a sex slave to the mafia don and Salim still his ally, Jamal is till doing sundry jobs. In an attempt to find Latika again unable to rescue her from the Don, he strikes luck with “Who wants to be a Millionaire”, where the arrogant host Prem find hard to gulp down the fact that a call center assistant cum tea vendor is sitting on the hot seat. One by one Jamal is able to answer the question, from what the institution of life had taught him and all this is narrated to us in series of flash backs, his life’s story which engulfs him. Ultimately, Latika is helped to escape by Salim for whom this act is more of his renunciation of his ‘sin’. Jamal wins both Latika and 20 million rupees in the end, life coming full circle.Dev Patel, 'Jamal' of the movie is a boy that everybody could relate to. The expressions he has while confronting arrogant host, the expression of his love for Latika. In an typical bollywood style he tells Latika that he'd wait for her everyday at 5 at VT Station till the day she comes and in an equally absurd manner he waits for her after the he has become the millionaire. With all the media attention he was getting prior to the show, he still could escape and meet Latika at the station, without anyone noticing him. The way incidents have been portrayed in the movie is at times rather unbelievable. A blind beggar boy form the orphanage whom the grown up Jamal meets on his way to find Latika, is able to tell him that a hundred dollar bill has Benjamin Franklin's photo and this becomes the key to one of the many answers in the show. Another scence that i really remember is the one where the young tourist guide Jamalin Agra is trying to make money from Amercian tourist by giving them some story about Taj Mahal whereas his brother sells all the parts of the car. Jamal is beaten and the American lady giving him some money says, this is the American way of love.Adapted by the British screenwriter Simon Beaufoy from the Vikas Swarup bestseller Q and A,Danny Boyle’s Slum Dog Millionaire has a charisma about the Indian cinema that the west is still to discover. This heart felt sensible storytelling in the Indian metropolis, in the most intrusive way.Shooting on location, in the slums, amongst the real crowds, capturing the race for survival. The director who has given some world-class works like 'Trainspotting' and '28 days later' has done full justice to the film, there are few flaws but those can be simply ignored. I was just too happy watching this energetic film and would watch it again at any given instance. The end credit bhangra-hip-hop song by AR Rehman completely peps you up and you are left feeling too happy for Jamal and Latika.Pic Posted by Neha at 6:13:00 PM 1 Comments, suggestions or opinions Links to this post Reactions: Labels:Movies, Career, Women, Life, Humour Movie, Review Thursday, December 25, 2008 King Khan may become part of 'Taj To Oberoi' Soon after Mumbai was released from the siege of terror, filmmakers registered nearly 20 titles which dealt with this horrendous subject. Tragedies are 'masala', they sell like hot cakes and this was proven when the first title was submitted when the fierce firefight between 10 gunmen and NSG was still going on. Filmmaker B Subhash who went ahead with titles 'Taj to Oberoi' and 'Bird's Point of View Taj Terror' says he wants Bollywood's top notch actors to be part of his movie. Shahrukh Khan might play Late Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan in B Subhash's movie on Mumbai terror attacks called 'Taj to Oberoi'. If things go as planned, John Abraham might play the role of an NSG commando whose strategies helped neutralise the terrorists and Mithun Chakrobarty as NSG Chief JK Dutt. The films shooting is due to start in January. This emotional story would highlight the pain attacks caused to the people and the sense of unity that was brought about.Pic Posted by Neha at 12:55:00 AM 0 Comments, suggestions or opinions Links to this post Reactions: Labels:Movies, Career, Women, Life, Humour Movie, Mumbai, Sharukh Khan, Terrorism Tuesday, December 23, 2008 Ghajini: Old wine in New bottle How now. This is what is called old wine in a new bottle. Picture this: A successful businessman, Sanjay Singhania(Aamir Khan) comes to know of an admirer, Kalpana(Asin). A model by profession, Kalpana boasts of being his girlfriend when she doesn't even know who this man is. Sanjay goes on to meet this girl to deal with this issue. On the way he falls in love with this very beautiful girl who helps handicapped kids cross the road. Sanjay instantly falls for this young girl only to realise later that this girl is Kalpana. The spark changes into fire and both are deeply in love. Sanjay however doesnt disclose his real identity to Kalpana. One fine day in her fight to save a group of young girls form some hooligans. In this fight, Kalpana is killed and Sanjay is hit on his head by the rod, leading to short term memory loss and changing this romantic flick into a psychological thriller. How Sanjay is able to take revenge when he cannot recognize the killers of his girlfriend where a medical student (Jiah Khan) helps him out is the story of Ghajini. It is the same kind of a story line; Aamir Khan's hot new look, South Indian heart throb Asin Thottumkal and sexy Jiah Khan are already creating waves. To work with 'Mr. Perfectionist' Aamir Khan is 'a dream come true' for Kollywood's famous director A.R. Murugadoss. Sassy, slim, sexy yet intellectual Jiah Khan is playing the role of a medical student who helps Aamir take his revenge. This USP makes it special and somewhat different from its Tamil version. Ghajini is the Hindi adaptation of 2005 Tamil hit by the same name. Based on Christopher Nolan's Memento. The films title is inspired from Persian ruler Mahmud Of Ghazni , now in Afghanistan. He was also said to be suffering form short term memory loss. Even though this film is a remake there is still a lot different from its original script. Director A R Murugadoss, has 20 minute sequence towards the end of the movie that makes the Hindi adaptation completely different. As with Aamir Khan movies, there will be no special premier with this movie as well, but special previews would be held on Dec 24th, the film however releases on Dec 25th.
