transplanting me Home about?me where he?at? for me? aw,?shucks… transplanting me moving from there to here Feed on Posts Comments haiku friday - no?halloween Friday, October, 31, 2008 by monica @ transplanting me ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ no costumes needed haven’t stocked up on candy no trick-r-treat plans our first halloween in the kingdom of thailand certainly diff’rent ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~bonus naplopomo haiku~~~~~ i did it last year post thirty days in a row gonna try again Posted in haiku, holidailies, nablopomo | 5 Comments » her first bionic?birthday! Thursday, October, 30, 2008 by monica @ transplanting me just wanted to give a quick shout out to my mom. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM!! it’s her birthday. Posted in family | 6 Comments » souptacular crockpotalooza - bbq?pork Thursday, October, 30, 2008 by monica @ transplanting me my internal clock is telling me it’s fall. it’s time for the leaves to be changing and falling, it’s time for a first snow. for there to be some crispness in the air. it’s time to get out the sweaters and the quilts. but that’s all internal. because externally thailand is telling me that it doesn’t participate in the whole turning from summer to fall thing and don’t even get started with winter because that just ain’t gonna happen. - okay, that’s not entirely true. there has been some change in climate here. a certain nip in the air. and by nip i mean just enough to take the edge off of the infernal heat. i certainly didn’t mean to bring any jack frost imagery into the picture - cuz jack frost would not survive here. so… i was thinking that today i would make it feel like fall. i could slap boomama’s souptacular crockpotalooza badge up there at the top of this post and with all those pretty fall leaves i could pretend it is fall. maybe close up the windows and crank up the aircon until i can feel a chill in the air. here’s my contribution. and i can’t wait to visit all the links that will take me to what will probably be some wonderful looking recipes that will probably have to go into my “to cook in a more suitable climate” cooking category. what? don’t you all y’all have that category, too? this makes 12 servings. bbq pork for sandwiches ingredients 1 (14 ounce) can beef broth 3 pounds boneless pork ribs (i used bone in, but you can also use another cut of pork - loin, shoulder, etc.) 1 (18 ounce) bottle barbeque sauce directions Pour can of beef broth into slow cooker, and add boneless pork ribs. Cook on High heat for 4 hours, or until meat shreds easily. Remove meat, and shred with two forks. It will seem that it’s not working right away, but it will. if you use another cut of meat you have to keep your eye on the cooking time. the bone in took longer.) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Transfer the shredded pork to a Dutch oven or iron skillet, and stir in barbeque sauce. (since i don’t have an oven big enough i skipped this step. but i think it would add something extra.) Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until heated through. (i returned the shredded pork to the crock pot and stirred in the bbq sauce. then let it cook for an hour longer on low.) i highly recommend this recipe for winey, because shredding the pork makes all distinguishable scars disappear. Posted in me me me | 8 Comments » house would probably kill?me Sunday, October, 26, 2008 by monica @ transplanting me like when he and foreman killed the girl who had a staph infection. cuz whatever i’ve got is probably some normal, everyday kind of thing, but he’d be looking for some exotic tropical something or other and treat me for it and then i’d be dead. i was up and feeling better for about 1/2 the day friday. now i’m not. Posted in me me me | Tagged sick, dr. house | 12 Comments » that’s why the “ex” in?ex-pat Saturday, October, 25, 2008 by monica @ transplanting me *warning for winey - get out the smelling salts and start waving them under your nose. because either you or hubby will most likely need them.* the other day s9 and a11 were playing with their friends on the playground at school. when s9 noticed that one of a11’s friends was wearing a flag as a do rag - i happen to hate the whole flag as a do rag thing, seems so disrespectful - and he loudly said to the friend, “wow, that’s cool. you have an american flag on your head.” everyone came to a stand still. i don’t have a picture of the actual do rag, but i can show you the flag. which is the flag of thailand and not the same as this flag sure the colors are the same. red, white and blue. but really, what kind of americans are we that our son could confuse these two flags? for the past week or so i have been quizzing the kids on their american flag knowledge. how many stripes? 13. why 13 stripes? they represent the 13 original colonies. how many stars? 50. why 50 stars? one for each state in the united states of america. and they all three knew these answers without any prodding. but that wasn’t enough. i asked them to sing the national anthem. and they could. then i had them say the pledge of allegiance. no problems. so it seems it was just a temporary lapse of something on s9’s part. he assures me it will never, ever happen again. and our new house is close enough to the american consulate that we could walk or bike ride by it daily so the kids can have a gander at ol’ glory. maybe we should make it twice a day. Posted in family, michael, s9 - previously known as ff | 4 Comments » it’s always?salt Wednesday, October, 22, 2008 by monica @ transplanting me i know people have a difference of opinion on the use of salt or sugar on watermelon (salt), grapefruit (salt) and even tomato (salt - what can i say i’m a creature of habit.) but i had no idea that people differed in their treatment of corn. i’m of the opinion that salt should be a no brainer when it comes to corn - my real preference is black pepper, but for the purposes of this post (i don’t know what those purposes might be, but whatever) i’m sticking with the salt or sugar options. but all kinds of things are done to corn here. after it’s out of the can - or off the cob - they add butter (yum), sugar (huh?), sprinkles (?!?!), and then they might even serve it in and/or over ice cream. really. they’ve opened a new bud’s ice cream near us so today i treated c14 and a11 to a scoop. and as much as i tried to convince them they would not order a scoop of corn or try the corn ice cream sundae. (corn is on the tropical flavors menu. i had no idea corn was a tropical thing.) i’m certain s9 would have given it a go. he loves all things corn - especially when they make it sweet. but he’s been in bangkok with michael today. they took the train to bangkok last night. just having a guys day together. and the only details of the trip i’ve heard so far are that they had a good time and they got whistled at and a stern talking to from a security guard at some fountain michael encouraged s9 to play in. i’m hoping it wasn’t this fountain - fountain at chatuchak park and i’m guessing it was this one - fountain at siam paragon mall they’re on the train back right now probably trying to perfect the “approved to tell mom” version of their day. Posted in food, thailand | 7 Comments » movin’, movin’, movin’ (not just?yet) Tuesday, October, 21, 2008 by monica @ transplanting me we’re moving house in december. we paid a deposit yesterday. signed a contract for a year and we’ll move over the kids’ christmas break. i’m posting some pictures to compare the house we’re currently living in to the one we’ll be moving to. i’ll post more pics of the new house after we’ve moved in. cuz i won’t really consider it a done deal until then. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *****current view off balcony***** we have a few neighbors. next door is a danish couple. it’s their vacation home so they aren’t there all that often. and across the street is a korean/american couple. and that’s it for neighbors here. *****soon to be view off balcony***** the majority of our new neighbors - maybe even all of them - will be thai. thais that speak thai. *****current breezeway***** this one is brighter and might appear larger *****soon to be breezeway***** this one is actually larger and it is far more charming can’t wait to try out that shower head. i think it will feel like i’m standing in a refreshing rain shower. and the ceiling fan? we don’t have them right now and i think they will come in handy. there’s one in every room. this is the front room. it’s a very bright room and not just because of all the windows. it also has 24 light bulbs in it. i’m pretty excited. we took a thai friend with us to help out with the thai speaking situation and she was wonderful. i wish we could move tomorrow - but christmas break will be here before we know it.
