I just finished reading this article:Kids Spend Every Waking Minute in Front of a Screen on Mashable.com
And I’ll have to say I agree. Unfortunately I’m also guilty as charged. One of the comments mentions how kids model their parents. Even today I’m going on about 8 hours of almost solid screen time. Now, granted, 90% of that time has been work related (article writing, research and blog updating, etc) and I have walked away to do some housework, get dressed, eat lunch with my daughters and their friend and pet the cats.
But I hate the fact that SO much of my life is in front of this screen in particular and I don’t enjoy it when my kids (my oldest daughter in particular) is equally drawn to the screen over many other things. I know that it’s a part of our life now and I’m thankful for the conveniences (i.e. finding recipes or directions via a quick google search, avoiding a running todo list by being able to just send off an email about something right away or throw a needed item in my Peapod or Amazon shopping carts and not have to think about it again or write it down somewhere, iming with hubs for a quick second throughout his workday, etc) but I don’t like how screens have replaced face to face or voice to voice time with people in general. Relationships now a days seem to be built pretty much via text messaging, facebook, emails and IM.
Sigh… I’m getting worked up and it just means I’ll have yet another excuse to sit in front of my screen and type some more. Signing off now… maybe.
